CARE AND DISPLAYING OF CRICKETS
The first thing to remember in caring for live crickets is not to overcrowd them.
Overcrowding stresses the crickets and tends to shorten their life span.
Crickets can be kept in many kinds of containers, such as cardboard boxes,
garbage cans, aquariums, or custom built displays. Whatever is used should
have slick sides or at least a 2-3 inch wide slick surface area around the
inside top of the container. The use of plastic tape, formica, plexiglass,
or sheet metal will work fine. When using typical plywood display boxes, we
recommend that no more than the following amounts are placed in the display
at a time. For a 2' x 4' x 20" deep display, 5,000 crickets; and for the
smaller 2' x 2' x 20" deep display, 3000 crickets. By placing the egg crates
from the cricket shipping boxes in the display there should always be plenty
of crawl space. Be careful not to add so many egg flats that they interfere
with measuring the crickets for your customers.
Your cricket display should always be kept clean, warm and dry. The ideal
temperature is 70-80 degrees. All displays should have proper ventilation.
Crickets are raised on specifically formulated feeds. Cricket feed can be
purchased at our online store. Always feed crickets daily if needed. Dry
oatmeal, finely ground poultry feed, quartered potatoes or apples can also be used.
Clean water is a necessity for keeping healthy crickets. The commonly used
chicken watering fountain works well for crickets. One of these fountains,
combined with our plastic water jar and an aluminum or plastic ring is all you need to
water up to 5,000 crickets. Remember the absence of clean water or a source
of moisture (fresh potatoes) will shorten the crickets life span.
